Taguchi Inspection Services supplies CWB Level 2 certified welding inspectors to Fort McMurray and the Wood Buffalo region. Oil sands work runs to its own clock: the turnaround window is fixed months in advance, the roster has to be full on day one, and an inspector who cannot badge in on the Monday is worth nothing to you.

CWB Level 2 visual welding inspectors
CSA W178.2 Level 2 — certified to inspect independently, interpret the code, accept or reject a weld, and sign the report that goes into your turnover package.
Single inspector or roster fill
One inspector for a two-week shop job, or coverage held across a turnaround window. Day shift, night shift, or rotation.
Short-notice mobilisation
Call with a start date. You get availability and a rate the same day, not a week later once a proposal has been through three approvals.
Tickets current, ready to badge
H2S Alive, CSTS-2020, OSSA/BSO, Fall Protection, Confined Space, Ground Disturbance, First Aid, fit test and current drug and alcohol. Copies sent before mobilisation.
Where our inspectors work in the region
- Oil sands mine and upgrader sites north and south of Fort McMurray — piping, structural steel, tankage and vessel work during planned outages.
- SAGD and in-situ facilities across the Athabasca region, including well pads, central processing facilities and steam distribution piping.
- Module and pipe spool fabrication received on site, where the inspection question is whether what arrived matches what was qualified.
- Construction and expansion projects requiring third-party surveillance independent of the contractor doing the welding.
Mobilisation and logistics
Fort McMurray is roughly 4.5 hours north of our Edmonton office on Highway 63, or a short flight into YMM. Both are routine for us and both are quoted up front rather than appearing on an invoice afterwards.
- Camp or town accommodation — we work to whatever your project has arranged, or arrange our own and bill LOA.
- Rotation schedules — 14/7, 20/8 and straight-through turnaround coverage are all normal.
- Winter conditions — preheat and interpass verification matters far more in a Fort McMurray January than it does in a shop, and our reporting reflects that.
- Site orientation and badging — tickets and drug and alcohol results sent ahead so the inspector is cleared before day one, not on it.

- CSA W59 — welded steel construction, the acceptance criteria most Canadian structural welds are judged against.
- CSA W47.1 — verifying the fabricator holds certification and is working within their division.
- CSA W178.2 — the standard the Level 2 qualification itself is issued under.
- ASME B31.3 and Section IX — process piping, and welding procedure and performance qualification.
- AWS D1.1 — where the project is specified to the American structural code.
- ABSA requirements — for pressure equipment work in Alberta.

- Tickets, certificate copies, insurance certificate and WCB clearance are sent before mobilisation, in whatever format your prequalification system wants.
- Daily inspection reports are issued the day the work happened, not batched at the end of the job.

Common questions
How fast can you have an inspector in Fort McMurray?
Depends on the week and on your site access process, which is usually the longer of the two. Send the dates and you will get a straight answer the same day rather than an optimistic one.
Do you cover turnaround night shift?
Yes. Day, night and rotating coverage are all quoted; night shift carries a premium which is stated in the rate, not added later.
Are you set up in our prequalification portal?
Current registrations are listed on the credentials page. If your owner uses a portal we are not yet in, tell us which one — it is a form, not an obstacle.
Is the inspector independent of the fabricator?
Yes. We are third party. We report to you, not to the contractor doing the welding, and we have no commercial relationship with them.
